Rebels retreat from Libyan oil port amid barrage

RAS LANOUF, Libya – With fierce barrages of tank and artillery fire, Moammar Gadhafi's loyalists threw rebels into a frantic retreat from a strategic oil port Thursday in a counteroffensive that reversed the opposition's advance toward the capital of Tripoli and now threatens its positions in the east.
The rout came as the U.S. director of national intelligence stressed that Gadhafi's military was stronger than it has been described and said that "in the longer term ... the regime will prevail." President Barack Obama has called on Gadhafi to step down, and the White House later distanced Obama from the director's assessment.
Hundreds of rebels in cars and trucks mounted with machine guns sped eastward on the Mediterranean coastal road in a seemingly disorganized flight from Ras Lanouf as an overwhelming force of rockets and shells pounded a hospital, mosque and other buildings in the oil complex. Doctors and staff at the hospital were hastily evacuated along with wounded from fighting from the past week.
The opposition, however, made some diplomatic gains. France became the first country to recognize the rebels' eastern-based governing council, and an ally of President Nicolas Sarkozy said his government was planning "targeted operations" to defend civilians if the international community approves. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she would meet with opposition leaders in the U.S., Egypt and Tunisia.
In Tripoli, Gadhafi's son Seif al-Islam vowed to retake the eastern half of the country, which has been in opposition hands since early in the 3-week-old uprising.
"I have two words to our brothers and sisters in the east: We're coming," he told a cheering crowd of young supporters. The son depicted Libyans in the east as being held "hostage" by terrorists.
Gadhafi's government sent a text message to Tripoli residents, warning imams at mosques against allowing protests after Friday prayers. The message quoted Saudi cleric Sheik Saleh Fawzan, a member of the Saudi Supreme Scholars Council, as saying it was "unacceptable" for any imam "who incites people (or) causes disturbances of the society in any mosque."
There were demonstrations after prayers for the past two Fridays, and militiamen used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the crowds who had gathered in mosques. There were an undetermined number of deaths after the Feb. 25 demonstrations. The retreat was a heavy blow for the ragtag rebel forces of armed civilians and mutinous army units that only days before had confidently charged west, boasting they would march the hundreds of miles (kilometers) to "liberate" Tripoli.
There were no concrete signs of Western moves toward military assistance that the opposition has been pleading for. A rebel spokesman went beyond repeated calls for a no-fly zone to prevent Gadhafi's air force from harrying opposition fighters and said the West should carry out direct strikes against regime troops.
"We have requested for all steps to be taken to protect the Libyan people. We believe the U.N. can do that. The bombardment of mercenaries and Gadhafi troop camps are among our demands," Abdel-Hafidh Ghoga, a spokesman of the governing council, told reporters in the opposition's eastern bastion of Benghazi.
The rebel capture of Ras Lanouf a week ago had been a major victory as they pushed along Libya's long Mediterranean coastline toward Tripoli, in the far west of Libya. A day after seizing it, their forces charged farther ahead, reaching the outskirts of Sirte, Gadhafi's hometown and a stronghold in the center of the country.
They were met there by a heavy counterattack that in the past week steadily pushed them back toward Ras Lanouf, 380 miles (615 kilometers) east of Tripoli, even as the rebels tried to build supply lines to keep up momentum.
The regime's offensive appeared to build in force. On Thursday morning, rebels were bringing in heavier weapons such as multiple-rocket launcher trucks and small tanks to the front lines just west of Ras Lanouf. But they came under a powerful barrage of shelling that pushed them back along the flat, desert scrubland into the tiny oil port.
A torrent of artillery and tank shells pounded around the facilities and the adjacent residential areas — long deserted amid the fighting.
Akram al-Zwei, an opposition leader in nearby Ajdabiya, said gunboats off shore joined the bombardment, though that could not be independently confirmed. He said four battalions of pro-Gadhafi troops were involved in the assault, battling the opposition's civilian militias and an eastern-based special commando unit, the Saiqa 36 Battalion, that had joined the rebellion.
Rebels fought back with rocket fire and anti-aircraft guns. But the fighters, mostly armed with assault rifles, appeared outgunned. "We don't have any heavy weapons," shouted one fighter, named Ali.
By the afternoon, many rebels were speeding east from Ras Lanouf in a frantic evacuation, most converging on the opposition-held oil port of Brega and Ajdabiya, 100 miles (160 kilometers) away. "Everyone just started leaving. It's not organized," said one retreating fighter. "The weapons we have just don't reach them."
Ras Lanouf's main hospital was hit by artillery or an airstrike, and the rebels pulled their staff out and evacuated patients to Brega and Ajdabiya, said Gebril Hewada, a doctor on the opposition's health committee in Benghazi, Libya's second-largest city.
At least four rebel fighters were killed, 35 wounded and 65 missing in the fighting, according to doctors in Brega.
It was not clear whether government forces completely held Ras Lanouf. Al-Zwei and Ghoga, the opposition spokesman, claimed it remained in rebel hands.
A rebel fighter who fled the city after nightfall said it still had not fallen.
"They are still bombing it from the air, the sea and with rockets, but the ground forces have not come in," said Mohammed el-Gheriani, carrying a Kalashnikov rifle.
But it appeared that Brega, 70 miles (116 kilometers) farther east, could also be under threat. During the day, a warplane struck an empty area in Brega, which has also largely been evacuated of residents and personnel.
"We need help from the international community, but we just hear promises," said Mohammed Ali al-Zwei, a 48-year-old rebel fighter. "They are doing nothing."
Taking back Ras Lanouf would be a major victory for Gadhafi, pushing his zone of control farther along the coast. His regime has also claimed a victory in the west, saying Wednesday it recaptured Zawiya, the closest rebel-held city to the capital, after a six-day siege. Western journalists in Tripoli were taken late Wednesday to a stadium on the outskirts of Zawiya that was filled with Gadhafi loyalists waving green flags and launching fireworks. But the journalists were not allowed to visit Zawiya's main square, and the extent of government control was not known in the city, located on Tripoli's western doorstep.
Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Qaid reiterated the government's claim Thursday, reading a military statement that Zawiya had been recaptured at 11 a.m. Wednesday and journalists would be taken Friday to visit the city.
"Now the forces are cleaning the city of the extremist armed militants," Qaid told reporters. He said "the security forces and civilians" had seized weapons and ammunition, including anti-aircraft guns, mortar shells and anti-tank missiles.
At a U.S. Senate hearing, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said there was no indication that Gadhafi would step down and offer a speedy resolution to the crisis.
"Gadhafi is in this for the long haul," he said. "From all evidence that we have ... he appears to be hunkering down for the duration."
Pressed on which side had the momentum, he was even clearer: "I think in the longer term that the regime will prevail."
Hours later, the White House distanced Obama from Clapper's remarks. Obama does not think Gadhafi will prevail, a senior administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss Obama's position on Clapper's comments. The official reiterated Obama's stand that Gadhafi has lost legitimacy and should leave power.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said Clapper has the full confidence of the president.
Western countries appeared to be growing more open in their embrace of the rebel movement. But they were struggling with how to translate that into concrete support.
France said it planned to exchange ambassadors with the rebels' Interim Governing Council after Sarkozy met with two representatives from the group, based in Benghazi.
"It breaks the ice," said Mustafa Gheriani, an opposition spokesman. "We expect Italy to do it, and we expect England to do it."
French activist-intellectual Bernard Henri-Levy sat in the meeting and said France was planning "targeted operations" to defend civilians if the interim council demands them and the international community approves. Henri-Levy did not elaborate and the French government declined to comment, so it was not clear if he was describing a new, more aggressive plan for intervention.
NATO has said it is drawing up plans for a no-fly zone but would only act with the approval of the U.N. Security Council. Britain and France have backed the rebels' calls for a no-fly zone.
But the U.S. showed caution, warning against a go-it-alone approach.
"Absent international authorization, the United States acting alone would be stepping into a situation whose consequences are unforeseeable," Clinton said. "We're looking to see whether there is any willingness in the international community to provide any authorization for further steps."
Clinton said the U.S. was suspending its relationship with Libya's remaining envoys to the country, although the move falls short of severing diplomatic relations. She said she would meet with Libyan opposition figures when she travels to Egypt and Tunisia next week, marking the highest level contact between the U.S. and the anti-Gadhafi elements.
NATO said it had started round-the-clock surveillance of Libyan airspace, and British Foreign Secretary William Hague said a meeting of EU foreign ministers would discuss how to isolate the regime.
U.N. Ambassador Maged Abdelaziz of Egypt expressed serious concern about the more than 1 million Egyptians still in Libya, "and we are afraid that the tragic events that happened in Iraq using human shields to protect air defense systems on the ground would be repeated." He added that he had "no concrete information" about whether that was happening.
Germany said it froze billions in assets of the Libyan Central Bank and other state-run agencies. The U.S., Britain, Switzerland, Austria and other countries have also frozen Gadhafi's assets.
"The brutal suppression of the Libyan freedom movement can now no longer be financed from funds that are in German banks," Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle said.
The Libyan government tried to stave off tough action, sending envoys to Egypt, Portugal and Greece.

Tericka Dye, Former Porn Star, Fired from Teaching Job

Posted by news , hot uk offers , google reader

"I've made a lot of bad decisions," she says.

What would you do if you found out your child was being taught by a former porn star? That's what happened in St. Louis recently when Tericka Dye, who acted in porn films in the mid 90s, was forced to resign from her job after one of her students revealed her past.
Dye, 38, was forced to resign from her position as a science teacher at Parkway North in St. Louis after a student asked her about previous career as an adult film actress under the name Rikki Anderson.
School officials removed Dye from the class room after deciding her past would be a distraction to students. She was placed administrative leave and will be paid through the end of the year.
As for Dye herself, she says acting in pornographic films -- including titles such as "Major Slut" and "Butt Brats 7" -- was one of the worst things she's ever done.
"I'm a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who's made a lot of bad decisions in life," she said.  "Anybody who's been in my classroom could tell you how much I love teaching and how much I love these students, and that should be what matters more than anything in my past."
This is the second time Dye has lost her job due to her past. In 2006, Dye was working as a volleyball teacher when she was suspended after adminstrators found out about her porn career.

Vivian Schiller bows out at NPR after rightwing sting brings embarrassment

Vivian Schiller

The chief executive of America's National Public Radio (NPR) network has quit her post after a video sting by rightwing activists posing as campaigners for a fictitious Muslim group.
Vivian Schiller resigned as NPR chief executive a day after the release of a video of a lunch at a fashionable Georgetown restaurant in which fundraisers for the network and the imposters discussed racist tendencies in the Tea Party, as well as the anti-intellectual streak in Republicans, Jewish media "conspiracy", and a potential $5m donation to public broadcasting.
The undercover operation was engineered by the conservative activist James O'Keefe, who made his name with a previous undercover sting against Acorn, a community organisation much reviled by the right in the US.
The senior NPR fundraiser in the video, Ron Schiller, who is no relation to the former chief executive, had been due to leave the radio network for the Aspen Institute.
But Schiller told reporters on Wednesday he would not be taking that job.
In the 11-minute, heavily edited video, he denounces the Tea Party as scary, seriously racist, and weirdly evangelical. "I mean basically they are, they believe in sort of white, middle-America, gun-toting. I mean, it's scary. They're seriously racist, racist people."
In the video Schiller offers no reaction to the impostors' claims to be a front group for the Muslim Brotherhood and laughs when one of the men jokes that NPR should be known as National Palestinian Radio.
Vivian Schiller immediately condemned his "appalling" comments, and the network made clear that it had never intended to accept the proffered $5m.
But in a conference call with reporters, Dave Edwards, the chairman of the NPR board, said that Schiller had to go. "The CEO of any organisation is accountable for all of the operations of that organisation," he said.
Vivian Schiller's exit is the latest in a string of high-profile and speedy departures from NPR since last autumn.
The episode led to immediate calls from Republicans to cut off funds to public broadcasting, and columnists predicted further turmoil for NPR.
The media commentator Jeff Jarvis said on his blog that Schiller's departure suggested NPR's board was too weak in the face of political pressure. Others suggested that NPR had been too quick to "sack" its chief executive.
The network acknowledged some of the turmoil hitting the organisation. "I recognise the magnitude of this news – and that it comes on top of what has been a traumatic period for NPR and the larger public radio community," Edwards said in a statement.
NPR had yet to fully recover from its clumsy sacking of Juan Williams, a political analyst who did double duty on the rightwing TV network Fox News. Williams, who had been at NPR for 10 years, was sacked for comments made on Fox last October when he said that he felt nervous getting on a plane with people dressed in "Muslim garb".
The sacking, and a network official's snide comments about Williams's mental state, made the commentator a hero to conservatives, who embraced him as a victim of political correctness.
Williams also got a full-time job with Fox. Three months later NPR forced out the news executive who had sacked Williams.
But Williams's dismissal had already inspired O'Keefe, who arranged for two colleagues to pose as activists for a Muslim Brotherhood front group which was offering NPR $5m with no strings attached.
Potential damage to NPR was compounded by the fundraiser's assertions that the network would be better off without federal funds.
In public, however, NPR executives have been fighting hard to stop Republican cuts to public broadcasting.
The exposé of NPR is the second big coup for O'Keefe, although he also has credibility problems. He came to fame in 2009 with a takedown of Acorn, an organisation that had worked for 40 years with poor communities. In 2009, he and a female accomplice visited Acorn offices posing as a pimp and prostitute seeking advice on evading taxes. Acorn disbanded late last year.
But O'Keefe pleaded guilty last year to bugging the telephones of the Louisiana Democratic senator Mary Landrieu, and was sentenced to three years' probation. He was also caught conspiring to lure a CNN reporter to a houseboat for a sex tryst, which he planned to film with hidden cameras.

Don't Get Hacked: Why Protecting Yourself From Hackers And Computer Viruses Is Easier Than You Think

Posted by news , hot uk offers , google reader

Knowing how to use the Internet in the 21st century can only be equivocated to having a super power. You can do things that people 30 years ago thought only The Jetsons would be able to accomplish: send letters without needing postage, turn your car on from your phone, operate traffic lights and fire, police and ambulance notification systems. The world is your oyster. However, like any super power, if all of this control is placed in the wrong hands, personal and public safety is called into question.
I try to use the Internet with caution, and I struggle to understand why anyone would hack into your computer or spread a virus. But, just last week, I was the victim of a Viagrus (an email virus touting Viagra). True, this email spammer does no actual damage to my computer, but there is sustained damage to my dignity.
Within moments of opening the Viagrus, it was sent to all of the friends and family in my contacts list. My dad, brother and husband didn't miss a beat: Was I trying to send them a not so subtle signal? No, dad, I'm not angling for another sibling. No, it's not a hint. The jokes flooded in, and, in a few days, I was rid of the Viagrus and a little wiser, too.
Even though my situation could be resolved by a few uncomfortable jokes between father and daughter, brother and sister, it got me thinking: With so many hackers and viruses floating around the Internet, the need for understanding what viruses are and how they affect your virtual world is more important today than ever. Unfortunately, computer safety is rarely taken as seriously as it should. So listen up. Keeping your information safe is easy, just follow these steps.
Hacking
To understand what hacking is, think of it as virtual breaking and entering. A masked villain is infiltrating your computer to steal what is rightfully yours: your virtual property. Once hackers break in, they can alter important information, delete key files, and even crash an entire network of computers.
Most often, computer hackers break into large consumer websites. The goal: to steal bank account and credit card information. Consider these tips for your Internet security:
• Use a firewall. Even though hackers usually affect large company websites, that does not mean that home networks are completely safe. With a firewall in place, you can control your security, and filter what information from the internet is safe and what is not.
• Use caution when giving out personal information on the internet. We hear it all the time, but do we really listen? Use software to keep information safe, and only give out your information if you trust the company. Check the BBB Business Review before buying from a company of which you have no direct knowledge.
• Ignore your preconceived notions. Kids hack too. It's hard to imagine a teenager that has the power and knowledge to bring a network of computers to their knees, but it's been done. According to Martha Stansell-Gamm, Head of the Justice Department's Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section, an 18 year old "instructed 7,000 computers to attack Microsoft networks." Teach your children safe computer practices, just as you would teach them that robbing a bank or driving drunk is wrong. Just because it's virtual doesn't mean the consequences are virtual too.
Viruses
Viruses are similar to hacking in that they exist to impair or destroy the infrastructure of your computer. However, much as its name would signify, a virus is like a common cold. It is easily passed from computer to computer through the Internet with nothing more that the click of a button or the opening of an email. Once it reaches as far as it can, the virus takes over the hosting computer.
Unfortunately, for its victims, viruses infect your computer often before you even know what you did wrong.
• Don't open emails that are suspicious. It's relatively common knowledge that you shouldn't open an email that touts "FREE FREE FREE" or "VIAGRA CHEAP" in the subject line, but the landscape of email viruses has changed in the last few years. Now, viruses can appear as if they are coming from someone in your contacts. Make sure to monitor subject lines, even if you know the sender, and if you are the victim of an email virus, immediately warn your contacts because they are the next target. After that, change your password often over the next few weeks.
• Back up your information. Viruses can affect just your email, but, too often, they spread throughout your entire computer. While buying a new computer can be painful, losing pictures, documents and music can hurt even more. Once a month, once a week, even once a day, take the time to back up information that you can't live without.
In summation, use your powers for good, but remember that the Internet houses many-a-Lex Luthor just waiting in the shadows for the opportunity to wreak havoc on your virtual life.

Big 12 basketball tournament

Posted by news , hot uk offers , google reader

This year's Big 12 basketball tournament will not be in Oklahoma City. It will be in Kansas City, which is sad for fans who like to go in person. Because of that, there will be plenty of people who do not make the trip, so they will be catching all the games on TV.
Today was the final day of the Big 12 regular season conference play. Bedlam was in Norman with the Sooners overcoming the Cowboys on Senior Day with a 64 to 61 win. The W broke an 8 game losing streak for OU, and perhaps it kept them out of last place in the Big 12 conference.
The 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament may not end up being great for either team in Oklahoma. You never know though. Perhaps either the Cowboys or the Sooners will manage to shock the conference and do something great.
Game 1 of the Big 12 basketball tournament will be Wednesday, March 9. It is Nebraska vs. Oklahoma State. Tipoff will be at 11:30 a.m., and the game will be broadcast on the Big 12 Network. On the same day at 6 p.m. you can catch Baylor vs. Oklahoma on the Big 12 Network as well.
The entire Big 12 basketball tournament is Wednesday, March 9 through Saturday March 12, and you can catch the games on the Big 12 Network, ESPN 2 or ESPN throughout the week. If you aren't near your TV during some of the earlier game times, you can also watch the with free live stream from your computer or phone.
After the tournament, the Big Dance will be announced with Selection Sunday.

As Miley Cyrus Readies For 'SNL,' What Are Her Former 'Hannah Montana' Co-Stars Up To?

Posted by news , hot uk offers , google reader

Miley Cyrus is no longer leading a double life on the small screen, but that doesn’t mean she’s using her new freedom to bask in the sun and party in the U.S.A. This Saturday the former "Hannah Montana" star will make her hosting debut on "Saturday Night Live," and from the episode's teasers, it looks like we'll get to see how Miley’s impression of herself stacks up against Vanessa Bayer’s. The showdown should be...pretty cool!
As Miley prepares to take the Studio 8H stage, we got to wondering what her former "Hannah Montana" co-stars are up to, now that the curtain has been drawn on the Disney series. Keep reading after the jump to find out!
Emily Osment (played Lilly Truscott)
Though Emily recently had to cancel an upcoming tour with "Drake & Josh" heartthrob Drake Bell due to a scheduling conflict of his, she reassured her fans via her blog that she is "finding new ways to get on the road again." For those who can’t wait, or like me, can’t make it to Ontario to catch her concert on March 12, we’ll have to settle for popping in the DVD of "Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2" to get our Emily fix, as she voices the cute pup Pep. By the way, I am absolutely loving Emily’s grown-up image in her latest video "Lovesick" and can’t help but think that Lady Gaga herself would approve of the costume choices (especially at the 2:41 mark).
Mitchel Musso (played Oliver Oken)
Mitchel shows no signs of slowing down. Tweeting yesterday that he "wants to rock n roll all night," I believe it! He’s just released his seventh video for his sophomore album, "Brainstorm," which features eight tracks. Mitchel will be sticking close to his Disney roots, as he’s reprising his role as Jeremy Johnson in "Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Generation," which premieres on the Disney Channel June 24, 2011. Until then, Mitchel will be living like a king…resuming production on his Disney XD series "Pair of Kings," that is.
Jason Earles (played Jackson Stewart)
Last night on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," Miley revealed that what she misses most about "Hannah Montana" is spending time with Jason on set. For a duo that seems to get along so well, they must have really been using their acting skills to portray a bickering brother-and-sister duo for five years. It looks like 34-year-old Jason will continue to take on youthful roles (so many adult actors dream to be in his position, I’m sure). He’s rumored to be starring alongside Disney starlets Ashley Tisdale and Jennifer Stone ("Wizards of Waverly Place") in the upcoming Christmas-themed romantic comedy "Holly, Jingles, and Clyde 3D."

Miley Cyrus 'SNL': Justin Bieber Visits 'The Miley Cyrus Show'

Posted by news , hot uk offers , google reader

Since Miley Cyrus was this week's host on "Saturday Night Live", it was inevitable that she'd have to appear on "The Miley Cyrus Show," the hilarious recurring sketch featuring newcomer Vanessa Bayer as Cyrus. What we didn't predict, however, is that she'd be impersonating fellow teen pop idol Justin Bieber.
Cyrus had her Bieber impression down to the wink, chin-grab and purple hoodie. She even brought her own "swagger coach." After a question about his new haircut the host remarked that Bieber was growing up and Bieber followed up with a joke about his recent middle finger fail.
"That's like me smoking Salvia," Bayer-as-Miley quipped. The real Cyrus then turned to the camera and said:
"There's no reason why you wouldn't, because it's totally legal yo."
At least she can make fun of herself.

A Tale of Two 22s

Thomas and Rona Reeves have two children who are star athletes with 4.0 or better grade point averages. Both kids also are playing basketball today for a chance to reach the Georgia High School Association’s Class AAAAA Final Four. Life is great in the Reeves household, right?
Well, yes and no.
Tevin Reeves is a 6-foot-1 senior guard for theWheeler Wildcats whose team is playing at theUniversity of West Georgia at 5:30 p.m. today. Amber Reeves is a 5-foot-10 sophomore guard for the North Cobb Warriors. Her team also is playing today at 4 p.m., but 157 miles away at Fort Valley State University.
The start time for the two games is separated by only 90 minutes, making it impossible for both parents to see both games. But this is nothing new for this busy family who has juggled basketball schedules all season.
During the regular season, when both Tevin and Amber played on the same day–a normal occurrence–both Thomas and Rona would start at Amber’s North Cobb game.
“Normally I will jet out of Amber's game and rush to Wheeler's game,” Thomas said. “Normally I get there and the Wheeler guys are warming up. Sometimes it's close; sometimes it's not as close.”
Thomas will record Tevin’s game and share it with family and friends, but not until all four members of the Reeves family sit down and watch the game together.
When both teams play at the same time, as they will today, the family relies on text messaging to stay up to date. Each parent will send the other a score update at the end of each quarter.
It’s a system the family has just about perfected, but it has taken time and a lot of work. It starts with both basketball schedules on the refrigerator. Then the family maps out the locations of games and the quickest routes. The plan has been drawn up and worked over with great care. The Reeveses know just about every detail of the surrounding area when it comes to the two team’s schedules.
“We know where each team is playing, and it kind of makes it easy because Wheeler has a smaller region,” Rona said. “They don't have as many games as North Cobb. And Tevin plays with Wheeler, who many times may go out of town. It kind of made it easy this year for us because Tevin was out of state playing and Amber was still playing locally.”
A great example occurred over the holiday break. Wheeler traveled to national tournaments in Hawaii and Myrtle Beach while North Cobb played locally in Atlanta.
The Reeves family caught another break when the snowstorm hit the area in January. Because of makeup games, North Cobb played a Wednesday game–typically high school games are on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday–and Wheeler played a Monday game. That gave Tevin and Amber a chance to see each other play live.
Tevin “was so excited that he could actually attend her game,” Rona said. “And she was excited because his game was on a Monday. They are excited when they get to go to each other's game. They are the biggest critics of each other too. They love to get that criticism from one another, and they feed on that.”
The criticism is mostly constructive, Thomas said. “They are each other's biggest fans. And when they get to go to each other's games, trust me, they are probably the loudest fan in the gym.”
Tevin works out frequently with Amber on conditioning and helps with other aspects of her game. But Amber paid the biggest homage of sibling support this season when she changed her number from 30 to 22.
“Out of respect for her brother, she changed her number to 22 when it became available this year,” Rona said. “She changed her number to 22 to match Tevin.”
As much as they like and care for each other, the two basketball stars still aren’t afraid to hand out harsh criticism. According to their father, you can frequently hear either one telling the other to "pick it up" or offering advice about a certain area of the game.
But how will the family handle two basketball games so far apart today? Who will go where?
Thomas will head back to his alma mater to watch Amber play with her North Cobb teammates. “I'm actually going to go to the game at Fort Valley State. I'm a Fort Valley State graduate, so it will be like going home for me. I played ball there also.”
Thomas is hoping that one of the other Wheeler parents will take over for him and record the Wildcats’ game. But what both parents really hope for is two wins.
“To see both of them make it to the Final Four would really be a great achievement for them,” said Thomas, who coached both Tevin and Amber since they were 5 years old. “Tevin was on the 2009 state championship team. And Amber, when she was 11, was on the 11-U AAU national championship team. Tevin's goal is to win a second state championship, and Amber's goal is to get a state championship to go with her AAU championship.”
You might say Thomas and Rona’s only goal is to get both kids in the same gym at the same time.
“I'm just really hoping that they do both win on Saturday so that we'll have them at one venue at the Gwinnett Center and we'll see both of them play back to back,” Rona said. “That's my hope.”

Radical Venezuelan pro-Chavez leader Lina Ron dies

Posted by news , hot uk offers , google reader

CARACAS, Venezuela — Lina Ron, a vocal supporter of President Hugo Chavez who led radical street groups, died of a heart attack Saturday, a Venezuelan government official said. She was 51.
Information Minister Andres Izarra confirmed her death, saying she had no vital signs when she arrived at a hospital in the capital,Caracas. "Honor and glory to Lina Ron," Izarra said on Twitter.
Ron led groups of Chavez supporters that were involved in attacks on opposition protests, and she repeatedly said she would take up arms if necessary to defend Chavez and his socialist movement.
With platinum-blond hair and a tough-talking nature, Ron soon became a household name in Venezuela within the first few years after Chavez took office in 1999. She founded the small political partyVenezuelan Popular Union and was for years a prominent voice in the radical wing of Chavez's movement.
Chavez once said Ron was "a good woman, but she tends toward anarchy."
The president publicly opposed some of her tactics. She faced various charges related to her involvement in disturbances.
In 2009, a court upheld criminal charges against Ron including assault and illegal use of a firearm for her role in an attack in which her group hurled tear gas canisters at the studios of the television station Globovision. She also led a group that stormed and temporarily occupied the offices of the Vatican's representative in Caracas in 2008.
In an earlier protest that drew widespread criticism, she burned a U.S. flag shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
In a 2002 interview with The Associated Press, Ron described herself as a "social fighter."
"I'm the ugly part of the process, the one who gets the disagreeable part — confronting" Chavez's enemies, Ron said.
Some government opponents have said Ron was useful for Chavez in that she would regularly intimidate members of the opposition while government officials publicly distanced themselves from her.

Detroit Tigers, Stevo Poulin, Dwight Howard and Saturday's Top Sports Buzz

The Detroit Tigers, Stevo Poulin, and Dwight Howard are absolutely dominating the sports headlines on this early Saturday afternoon. Good stuff, to be sure, and making things even better is the fact that we have a full slate of college hoops to discuss too.
Before we get into that, however, let's briefly discuss the headliners.
Thanks to Miguel Cabrera, spring training for the Detroit Tigers started out as a much-publicized affair. Things have calmed down a little recently though, which means that both the team and fans can get back to focusing on baseball. The AL Central is pretty deep this year, and the Tigers are going to have to match wits with a Minnesota Twins squad that looks very strong and a Chicago White Sox team that is as thunderous as ever. Naturally, we have some thoughts about their chances, and we just might share them.
Have you head of Stevo Poulin yet? If you haven't, all you really need to know is that he might be the most intimidating wrestler in the world right now. He dominates the competition, and he does it with a certain kind of ferocity that you just don't come across that often. He also has a badass mohawk.
Oh, he's also just eight years old.
And then there's Superman. Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic had their four-game winning streak snapped by the Chicago Bulls Friday night. Howard got a loose with his elbows at one point, and was awarded his 16th technical foul. That's the line as far as the NBA is concerned, and Howard will be out of action against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night as a result.
All this and more is ahead!

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to come out fighting at Liverpool after week of woe

Posted by news , hot uk offers , google reader

When Sir Alex Ferguson steps out at Anfield tomorrow, a defiant glare will no doubt make its way towards Kenny Dalglish in the home dugout and carry on in the direction of the Kop beyond. It is unlikely to come to a halt there. After the week he's had, the Ferguson brand of defiance tends to apply to all and sundry, rather than just those in his immediate way. We have been here before. A setback, such as Tuesday's defeat at Chelsea, coupled with a burning sense of injustice, and the outcome seldom varies. It's suddenly Fergie against the world. Laying down the law: Fergie's words have landed him in hot water The siege mentality kicked in at Carrington yesterday, when the Manchester United manager, evidently still bristling over events at Stamford Bridge and his subsequent FA charge, battened down the hatches and stubbornly refused entry even to his club's in-house TV station. They will be lapping it up at Anfield, revelling in his discomfort, but history suggests a note of caution might be advisable. On the rare occasions he has had to endure a similar dip in fortunes, Ferguson has used it to galvanise his side and turn them into a tighter unit than ever, before unleashing them on their next unsuspecting opponents. There are few more dangerous beasts than a wounded Fergie, and he appeared to be doing his utmost once more yesterday to turn adversity to his advantage, ahead of the eagerly-awaited showdown with Liverpool. As expected, he decided to take on the FA over his criticism of referee Martin Atkinson at Stamford Bridge, and Sportsmail understands it was at least partly based on a show of support from his players. No defence: Sir Alex lambasted the ref at Stamford Bridge An indignant Ferguson feels he is being victimised over the furore that followed Wayne Rooney's use of an elbow at Wigan last Saturday and that he is now facing a largely bogus charge for comments that were echoed by many onlookers on Tuesday night. Significantly, several of his players have apparently backed him and let it be known they believe he was right to take Atkinson to task. He could face anything up to a six-game ban if his FA battle fails, but he will not be swayed from a course he sees as right and proper. He intends fighting it all the way, and the immediate consequence is that he will be free to cross swords with his old adversary Dalglish, as United bid to take another stride towards eclipsing Liverpool and winning their 19th title. Playing the game: Dalglish knows the tactics Fergie employs A different record may occupy his thoughts before that, though, with Phil Dowd taking charge and bringing with him the distinction of brandishing more red cards to Ferguson's players than any other referee. If he is tempted to go to work on Dowd's psyche, with his penchant for mind games, he has been warned not to bother trying with Liverpool. Speaking earlier this week, ahead of his 60th birthday, Dalglish said: 'He has used psychology before in the pre-amble to matches, but he will only get sparring practice if he tries to use it on ourselves. We've both been a long time out of short trousers. It will have to be a good one to catch us out.' Fresh from finally agreeing a new four-year deal, Darren Fletcher has vowed to build on the legacy of veterans Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, players he hailed as 'inspirational.' As he prepared once more to take on a key role at the heart of United's midfield, the 27-year-old Scotland captain said: 'Players like those three will never be replaced, because they are greats of the game. You look at players like them and realise there are people here who are an inspiration, with what they do on the pitch and the way they conduct themselves off it. 'If any of us go close to matching their careers we will count ourselves very fortunate. But I believe in the ability of the new wave coming through and hope we can create our own history.' Meanwhile, Ecuador's FA have risked angering Ferguson after saying they will pick the injured Antonio Valencia for two friendlies this month - and may not even play him. Valencia has missed six months with a broken ankle sustained against Rangers in September. Fe rguson hope s the 25-year-old will make his return to action this month and he has been pencilled in to play for the reserves against Blackpool on Wednesday.  Jamie Carragher exclusive: What the Liverpool defender really thinks of Fergie, Neville and UnitedNasri: Arsenal will win the league, Manchester United are running scared of usUnited boss Ferguson to appeal FA charge over comments on ref Atkinson after Chelsea defeatAll the latest Manchester United news, features and opinion  Explore more:People: Alex Ferguson, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Kenny Dalglish, Gary Neville, Antonio Valencia, Martin Atkinson Places: Liverpool, Ecuador, Scotland
